This introductory design course will provide students with a broad overview of the fundamental principles and elements of design across various disciplines. Through lectures, activities, and projects, students will learn about the design process, typography, color theory, composition, visual communication, form and function, user experience, branding, advertising, packaging, environmental design, fashion, industrial design, and the business of design. This course covers both the conceptual creative side of design as well as practical applications. Students will develop core competencies in design thinking, problem-solving, and visual communication. Projects allow students to apply their knowledge by redesigning existing products, creating brand identity systems, drafting layout compositions, and more. This course aims to build a strong foundation in design while allowing students to explore potential concentrations for further study. Upon completion, students will assemble a design portfolio demonstrating comprehension of design fundamentals applicable across majors and careers.
